Spots in Shots ? Agenda

Cultural anthropologist Mélanie van der Hoorn conducted research into short films with a focus on architecture and urban development. She explored how the short film gives meaning to the built environment. Her research resulted in the book Spots in Shots: Narrating the Built Environment in Short Films, which will be presented at AFFR 2018. Three short architecture films will then be screened.

Spots in Shots explores the ideas of designers who are prepared to veer off the beaten track and question their own profession. It is an invitation to architects and urban planners to make buildings talk, an invitation to filmmakers to use their art to reveal hidden layers, and an invitation to everybody else to enjoy being amazed, aroused and enthralled by all those stories.

Booklaunch and filmscreening

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) will be organizing a special around this book on October 13th at 12.45 PM.

Festival curator Jord den Hollander will be having a conversation with the author: Why focus on the short architectural films? Which stories are told in those films? Why are they so suitable for transmitting architecture and urban design? Why are they so surprising, inspiring and exciting for 'non-architects' too?

After this introduction the AFFR will screen three films which are being discussed in the book: When You Return I’ll Be Living by the Waterside (Petra Noordkamp, 14 min), Chamber Music – Audiovisual Building Sound Portrait (Katharina Blanken, 9 minuten) and Il Girasole: A House Near Verona (Christoph Schaub & Marcel Meili, 15 min). Film makers Petra Noordkamp and Katharina Blanken will be present at the screening for a Q&A

Afterwards the book Spots in Shots will be available in the lobby where author Mélanie van der Hoorn will sign the books.
