This two-volume catalogue raisonné provides a complete overview of the etchings and paintings by Hercules Segers (1589/90-1633/40), one of the most mysterious and experimental artistsof the Dutch Golden Age. His mountain landscapes and vistas bear witness to an unbounded imagination. Segers was a pioneering etcher, who developed wholly individual, arcane techniques for his colourful etchings. Poets and artists down through the ages have been inspired by his poetic and melancholic paintings and prints. Rembrandt owned no fewer than eight of his paintings.

This two-volume catalogue raisonné contains detailed descriptions of all known paintings (18) and all of the prints of his etchings (184). The plate volume presents all of Segers’ known works, reproduced in full colour, most of them in actual size. The richly illustrated text volume contains a biography and essays on various aspects of Segers’ art, followed by in-depth descriptions of all prints and paintings. The contributions are written by specialists in different disciplines and based on new historical, art historical and technical research. The research, conducted under the auspices of the Rijksmuseum, provides not only new attributions, but also a wealth of information about the life and work of this wonderful and fascinating artist.
